Maybe Your Garden Isn't Growing Because You Keep Picking the Flowers
We spend so much of our lives trying to prove ourselves.
To prove we're good enough.
Smart enough.
Successful enough.
Healing enough.
Strong enough.
Sometimes, without even realizing it, we begin living our lives for witnesses instead of ourselves.
Imagine planting a garden.
You carefully prepare the soil. You plant the seeds. You water them faithfully. Day after day, you show up, even when it looks like nothing is happening.
Then one morning, the first flower blooms.
Instead of letting it soak in the sunlight, grow stronger, and become part of something beautiful...
You cut it.
Not because it's time. Not because it's reached its full potential. But because you can't wait to show someone that you're a gardener. You proudly hold up the flower and say, "See? It's growing." Then you go back and wait for another bloom. And when it appears, you pick that one too. Over time, your garden begins to look strangely empty. Not because nothing was growing. But because nothing was ever allowed to stay.
How often do we do this with our own lives?
We announce every new dream before we've given it roots. We look for applause before we've built confidence. We abandon a project because it isn't impressive enough yet. We share every small victory, hoping someone else will validate what we're becoming, instead of quietly allowing ourselves to become it. Sometimes we're so busy proving we're changing that we interrupt the very process of change. Growth isn't always meant to be public. In fact, most of the important parts happen where no one can see.
Roots don't grow above the surface. Neither does healing.
Neither does confidence.
Neither does character.
A tree doesn't apologize for spending years growing roots before it reaches toward the sky. It understands that what holds it up will always matter more than what others can see. Maybe that's the season you're in. Not the blooming season. The rooting season. The season where you're learning discipline instead of collecting compliments. The season where you're building habits instead of broadcasting goals. The season where you're becoming someone new before introducing her to the world.
There is something sacred about protecting the early stages of your dreams.
Not because they're too weak to survive. But because they're too important to be shaped by everyone else's opinions. The world celebrates flowers.
But flowers only exist because roots did their work in silence. So stop measuring your progress by how many people notice it. Stop rushing to prove you've changed. Stop picking every flower just to convince someone you're growing. Instead...
Water the garden.
Pull the weeds.
Protect the soil.
Trust the process.
One day people won't need you to tell them you're a gardener. They'll simply stand in awe of the garden you've cultivated. And by then, you won't need their approval anyway.
Because you'll finally know.
XO, Janthina
Reflection
Is there a dream, a habit, a relationship, or a part of yourself that deserves more privacy while it grows?
What if, instead of asking, "How can I show people I'm growing?" you asked, "How can I give myself permission to keep growing?"
Sometimes the most beautiful things in our lives aren't the ones everyone sees.
They're the ones we quietly protect until they're strong enough to bloom on their own.
